8th Grade Community Garden Math PBL
Driving Question:
How can we grow a variety of edible plants that would provide a balanced nutritious meal for a family living in Ward 7, a food desert?
Formative Assessment Plan
- Intermediate Feedback #1:
- As a class, we will discuss:
- What do we KNOW to address the driving question?
- What do we NEED to know to address the driving question?
- What can we DO to address the driving question?
- The teacher will require the students to complete a KND Graphic Organizer, and the teacher will give scholars feedback on their graphic organizer the same day.
- Intermediate Feedback #2:
- The teacher will have students put a link to their justification document that explains reasons for constructing a garden as the local solution for the problem of family access to affordable healthy foods in a shared Google doc.
- Scholars will be required to rate an assigned peer's document and give 2 suggestions about how their assigned classmate can make their project stronger and clearer.
- The teacher will give scholars feedback and a grade for their justification document and the feedback they gave their classmate.
- Intermediate Feedback #3:
- The teacher will assign scholars an activity where they will compare the growth rate of multiple plants in groups of 4. Students will rotate to a teacher-led station where the teacher will collect data about each students knowledge via their responses to questions in the chat. The teacher will use this data to inform in the moment instruction on comparing growth rates.
- Intermediate Feedback #4:
- The teacher will have scholar's submit their design of the garden that incorporates the scholar's knowledge of congruence, similarity, the pythagorean theorem, and physical models, transparencies, or geometry software (CCSS 8.G.A-B).
- The teacher will have individual conferences with each scholar to provide feedback in private breakout rooms.
- Intermediate Feedback # 5:
- The teacher will require that scholars publish their project on a social platform.
- The teacher will have students put a link to their publication in a shared google doc.
- Scholars will be required to rate and and give 2 suggestions about how two assigned classmates can make their project stronger and clearer.
- Final Feedback:
- The final project feedback will be given via the rubric below. The feedback given through out the project will be used to along with the student's final project data to complete the final rubric.
